what is fair trade?

1.  CREATE OPPORTUNITY -

Fair trade retailers act in the interest of their producers to ensure that artisans and farmers in the global south who live in poverty and lack access to long term, well-paying jobs, can support themselves and their families.

2. DEVELOP TRANSPARENT & ACCOUNTABLE RELATIONSHIPS -

Fair trade buyers and fair trade producers are honest with each other and work together to solve problems, to ensure that artisans and farmers have long term jobs.

3. BUILD CAPACITY -

Fair trade partners invest time and resources to help producers, farmers, artisans, and their communities, build their business and improve their communities.

4. PROMOTE FAIR TRADE -

Fair trade supporters believe that raising awareness about fair trade and educating customers and producers, inspires other businesses to adopt fair trade practices.

5. PAY PROMPTLY & FAIRLY -

Fair traders discuss prices openly and honestly so that producers understand their costs and earn a fair wage. FTF members also offer advance payment to help cover the cost of production.

6. SUPPORT SAFE & EMPOWERING WORKING CONDITIONS -

Fair trade means that producers and employees have a voice in decisions that affect them most and work in conditions that are healthy and free of discrimination.

7. ENSURE THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN -

Fair traders never use exploitative child labor and they support children's right of security, education, and play, and respect the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

8. CULTIVATE ENVIORNMENTAL STEWARDSHIP -

Fair traders encourage responsible use of resources and eco-friendly production. They also work to reduce, reuse, reclaim, and recycle materials whenever possible.

9. RESPECT CULTURAL IDENTITY

Fair trade products and production methods reflect the history and traditions of artisans and farmers in the Global South.
